Need help to indentify unknown Crosley Radio
3/28/2005 3:57:56 PMBob UK
The radio is a five valve model (6k8gt,6v6g,5y3,6q7g & 6j8g), with the following features: sw, mw & lw bands, external connections for aerial, p/u, ext spkr, magic eye tuning (6u5 valve), controls for tone, volume, band change & tuning. It is housed in a large (36in high) wooden cabinet. There are seven blind holes inside cabinet front for what looks like press button tuning, but no buttons on chassis (same cabinet used with different chassis??), Celestion loudspeaker with transformer mounted on spkr frame. The model was purchased in the UK & has mains voltage range 200-250v ac only. There are no markings/model numbers on chassis other than ht33181 & Crosley Prestotune on glass tuning screen. I have been told the model was purchased in 1939. Can anyone help identify which model it is? ....many thanks.
p.s this my 2nd posting, no joy 1st time round!

Post pictures and also....do the holes go through to the front of the radio cabinet, or are they behind some block-off plate? If they go through to the front of the cabinet, and are not blocked off, perhaps someone removed the push-button assembly. Also, Crosley readily equipped their radios with 220 volt supply transformers for European countries, so the supply is likely original. Most Crosley schematics talk about optional power transformers for 25, 50, and 60 cycle use.

Thomas.....Thanks for replying.
The holes are blocked of by a a strip of wood just below tuning scale, but it does not look like it's been added at a later date. Can't see any evidence on chassis that is ever had a push button assembly fitted. It does appear to be a European model as it has European & UK stations on tuning scale. It does have Crosley Prestotune on tuning scale, but all references I have found to Prestotune models have had push button tuning, wondered if it is cut down version for UK market?
Unfortunately can't include pictures as unable to paste on to this forum & do not have a web site to post them on.

Bob.

Well, if you want to e-mail pictures to anyone in here who might know what radio it is, you can simply click on their name above at left on their posting (like the one you are reading right now). If their name turns light blue, they have left an e-mail address, which is hopefully valid. You can then e-mail the pictures to them.

I am curious as to whether the prestotune was mounted to the chassis or cabinet. From the front is there any evidence of an amateur block-off, or does everything look professional?

What I have done, which takes a bit of time, is look at the circuitry of my particular radio, and then go through all of the diagrams, looking for those with the same tubes and such. Then I find the schematics that are closest to my radio. What also can happen when you do this is Nostalgia Air will go down for a while after you've looked through so many diagrams. Don't be surprised if this happens. That's just a signal for you to take a break.
