Sony ICF-SW55

Sony Shortwave Portable powers on but then powers off. LCD shows
time zone but no tuning power. No sound. Any ideas? I have the service manual but am not a technician....

dear i have repaired sw55 and icf 2010 many sets, although i hv service menual of 2010 and sw55, you can send the set,i can repair and send back to you. it is my hobby.

:raj - I have an SW55 that needs some help. It still receives AM but only at very low volume. If the volume is turned up, I just get a loud, low hum. On FM, I only get the loud hum and the radio shuts itself off after a few seconds. What would you charge to fuix it and how do I send it to you?

I've repair many of Sony's shortwave radios, including the 2010, SW55, and others. You can check out the 2010 user group on Yahoo groups for reviews of my work. I pride myself in charging low, low prices, since I do this as a service to fellow SWL'ers (I have a "real" daytime engineering job :))

Hi,
Have you had any luck in getting your radio repaired? I've fixed several SW55's in the past. Given your symptoms, I'd guess that the surface mounted elect. caps need replacing. This is a common fault with older Sony equiptment.
