Trying to identify a Emerson AM with Ingraham Cabinet
3/5/2005 8:44:42 PMChris
I bought this AM radio and now have it working I have $27.50 invested in it so far. I would like to find the model so I can get a set of prints and alignment instructions so I can pick up a few more stations. I did some searching on Google and did not find a picture of it. I could not readily find a chasis number. Anyone know where it is located on one of these units. I did find a number on the antennna that might be it 9LW 34415. I did a search for 9LW but did not find it either. You should be able to copy and paste the link below and view the pictures. The radio has a wooden Ingraham cabinet, the dial is on the right,it is AM only, and has two knobs below the dial, and a speaker on the left, it is also ran off of AC.

Hi Chris
I have two old Emerson wooden cabinet radios that I restored, one is from 1946 and the other 1947, what type of dial face does the radio have one it? does it have a small wooden hole grill on the front? does the dial face have a plastic cover or glass? if the dial face is round does it have a golden foil backing? and last what is the general shape of the case rectangle etc... if you could answer these questions I might be able to help you identify the year of make and a model number, usually the model number is on a paper tag on the bottom of the radio, let me know on this, I will try to help you.

The overall shape reminds me of the heavier construction metal lunch boxes. It it 13.5" wide x 6" deep x 9" tall. The top is curved front to back, not side to side like the cathederal types I saw pictures of. The dial face is located on the right side and is a rectangle. The cover for the dial face is molded plastic, the dial itself is a red piece of plastic in the center with a metal pointer that is a gold or bronze color. The handle on top feels like a plastic and pulls out of the case a few inches when it is picked up and feels like it is spring loaded. When you set it back down the handle retracts. I did not see any tags on the bottom. Just the Ingraham cabinet badge or plate.

I found a radio that is very close. A 1941 Emerson with handle on a web page located at www.rgbent.com/american.html. The only difference I can see in the picture is the 1941 grill shape or grooves go all the way from the way across, mine just covers the speaker area on the left.

If the reference is correct it is a 1940 Emerson Model 344. You can do a Google search and it shows up in the radio attic archives. I wish I could find more than a single reference
