The real key is to identify which frequencies are in use in your area that you want to listen to, and whether or not the emergency services are upgrading, or already upgraded.

Radio Shack is one source and ebay is also, but depending on who is behind the counter at Radio Shack depends on how much help you will actually get.

You might want to place a query on the "QTH" list, and there is likely more than one individual who will be able to help you too.

Also of a particular note, because of the events of 9-11, many of the emergency systems for police and fire are moving to the 800/900 Mhz trunked systems.

Charlotte, if you happen to live in a larger metropolitan area, look for a Ham radio supplier. They will be able to identify which frequency crystals that you need, they might have a source other than ebay, and they can give you a good idea of how much longer you will be able to use that radio. In some areas it will still be quite some time- in others, not very long at all.
