Although I haven't tried it, I've heard that the "Ground" connection should go to a water line or gas line. Does this help improve reception? Considering where my great-uncle lives, I want him to have a good antenna setup. Thanks!
Atwater Kent Model 60 already has caps between the AC line and chassis. This acts as a ground. A separate, water pipe, ground may help reduce noise?
The best antenna is as high and long as possible, within reason. You 20 foot wire should work well. A wire strung inside a console cabinet will work but not as well. Use the short antenna input for this.

:Having just repaired this unit for my great-uncle, I am considering building an external antenna. Right now, I have about 20 feet of #22 solid-strand wire attached to the "Long Antenna" connection. Would like to put the new antenna inside the cabinet where there are metal "loop eyes" to route the wire.
