Table model electrodynamic speakers
1/22/2005 10:19:01 AMThomas Dermody
I thought it might be interesting for those of you who are restoring various table model radios to know that I have been finding auctions on eBay for small 5 inch electrodynamic speakers (NOS). Most are manufactured under the Quam name, a well known speaker manufacturer.

Since not everyone uses the universally accepted term "electrodynamic" for field coil type speakers, you will have to try various words, perhaps electrodynamic, electro dynamic, field coil, electro magnetic, and other variations you may think of. Simply entering 5 inch speaker or five inch speaker may bring you what you want.

Thomas-

Thanks very much for the information about the five inch electrodynamic speakers mostly by Quam on e-bay. I thought like perhaps others that electrodynamic speakers were discontinued after 1942. Perhaps because of conversion from consumer to wartime production of permanent magnet speakers as they were probably less expensive to manufacture. I worked for Electronic Parts Co. in Albuquerque for sixteen years and we sold Quam speakers. They are a good quality product!
Thanks again,

The Quam speakers, as far as I am aware, are NOS. I think they date from the 1960s or earlier. They do have plastic wires, so they aren't too old. You can try contacting Quam to see if the model numbers for those speakers are still valid. If Quam knew more about the antique radio market, they'd probably drum up a few electrodynamics for to-day. It isn't that difficult to fit a standard Alnico magnet speaker with a field coil.
