two items, spark gap and spark generator ???

I have two devices that I believe to be as mentioned in the subject. The first is a spark gap made up as follows: hollor rounf hard rubber ball with gap plates in senter of ball, connections would go to the end of a brass shaft connected to each gap plate. The ball has an opening in the center outside and I am told that it was to allow a liquid such as alchol to be placed inside the ball to cover the gap, also told it was known as a "quench gap" and that there were only a couple of these made. Anyone got any ideas?
Second item is a small wooden box about 4 X 4 X 6-inches with the following thumb screw type terminals mounted on the front face of the box: left vertical-two terminals , each labeled "INT", In center frontis a Large round insulator type material with outside threads like to allow a cap to be threaded over the terminal, it is about 1-inch diameter with thumb-screw terminal, to the right of this is another terminal marked "GND" on the right vertical side, two terminals- top is "Neg", bottom is "Pos". On the top left of the bos is a brass strip with an insulated knob, spring-loaded open (looks like a miniature CW key) marked "start", to the right of this (key) is is a totary type off-on switch. Sindle lever moves horizontayyl to and from a contact.
The unit was made by Atwater Kent and identified as "System-K. Pat. in 1904,10,11 and 1912.
Anyone recognize these devices?

: Whe applying a small potential to the pos and neg terminals I can get a real hot spark across the center terminal and GND terminal when I tap the start key. Anyone recognize these devices?
