Need a schematic and age info on a Philco radio, it's
in a bakelite case it uses five tubes 7A8, 7C7, 7C6,
50L6GT, 35Z3. It currently is receiving out of band,
its AM only and a table top radio. On the front it says
Philco and Transitone under the philco.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Norvin.
The reference "Transitone" do not help too much.
I have had a look of "The collector's guide to Antique Radios ( Third edition )" By Martin & Sue Bunis and I see that since 1939 to 1948, Philco manufactured receivers with that reference.
I have also consulted the great book on Philco writen by Ron Ramirez "Philco radio 1928-1942" .There are lots of pictures and information on chassis employed, and tubes, but unfortunately, I can' find any chassis with the exact five tubes you mention. There are several similar with a tube 7B7 instead of 7C7(The rest of tubes remain the same ):
Models 42-PT2,42-PT4,42-PT7,PT-30,PT 49, PT-42, PT-44.
( I have schematics of some of them)
With six tubes ( the five you mention and one 7B7 ) is the model 42-321 and 42-PT10 ( I also have schematic)
( and of course I will e-mail it to you free !)
Could you e-mail me giving more details of your receiver ( color, number of knobs, dial position and shape)? I wish I could help you.
I recommend you to visit these two specific internet sites about Philco:
http://members.aol.com/philcodata/pdatindx.htm
www.chevytrucks.org/mrphilco/mrphilco.html
This last site is the web page of Ron Ramirez (above mentioned ). Is an expert on Philco.
Regards.

This is my first attempt to send a message on the Internet so please bear with me if I do actually manage to reach someone.
I,too, have a Philco radio just inherited from my Mother. I can't identify it either and the Philco Book by Ramirez is not in our local bookstore.
I'm not sure what I should relate so I will give a sketchy description of the cabinet first.
Brown wood (walnut?) with two thin light gold stripes (inlay?)running vertically across the top of the cabinet and then down the face in the speaker section. It is about 15x10x8 inches and weighs a ton.
Facing the front of the cabinet the speaker section is on the left and there are 4 vents backed by the speaker cloth. The vents are rectangular about 4" high by 1" wide, however all the corners of the rectangles have been rounded.
On the right hand side are 3 knobs, on/off - volume - tuning. Above the knobs is the tuning face, the upper part gold for the am bands, the bottom half dark for the shortwave bands. The word Philco is in this face.
In addition to the three knobs there is also a flip switch to the left of the on/off knob. This switch is used for the shortwave I think.
Looking at the back of the cabinet now. There is a abused metal plaque at the top that says Philco with a five digit number that I think starts 39- (Is this the model number?) Below this number are four other numbers with headings - the last one being
Watts 40. I believe that one of the other headings is the word cycles. I'm afraid to clean the plaque for fear of destroying some of the information. Any suggestions on what would work?
There are five tubes in a row sitting on a metal base. To the left of the tubes is a upright metal box which seems to have 2 wires coming from it. These 2 wires my Father attached to some old TV rabbit ears. On the right hand side at the bottom
is the regular wire and plug. This wire was folded up and pushed inside the cabinet. I took it out very carefully and found the cloth on the cord rotten at every fold and the wires were exposed. I plugged it in and it worked.
I listened to a cricket match on Radio Scotland. I then decided that the cord was a fire hazard so I wrapped it in electrical tape. I plugged the radio back in, turned it on and something went pop and it no longer works.
I'm in Montreal,Canada and would like to know what I have and where to go to get it fixed.
If you can help I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Your set was made in 1942, the last year of pre-WWII production. The first 2 didgits of a Philco model number are always the manufacturing date. A complete rundown on this set can be found in my book "Philco Radio: 1928-1942"
