My son fried the transformer on this model by plugging it into a 220V outlet. Does anyone know what type of transformer this used so that I can repair it? Specifically, I need to know what voltage the transformer steps down to (from 110 V AC). Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Kevin,
I have a couple of Magnavox parts chassis. Just need to know your chassis number. It is usually written on the tuner shield.

Dave

Hi Kevin,
Don't see that chassis # listed in Sams. Is your radio solid state? Might try looking for number on frame rail near power transformer.

Dave

Dave,

I found another number near the transformer. It is 214 06 00. Does this one look right?

Hi Kevin,
Don't see those numbers in Sams.
See if there's a number on the transformer itself. Both of mine are 300253-1D.

The number on the transformer is 300209-6-606-8-06.

Kevin, your chassis number is R214-06-00, SAMS Set 878, Folder 6. On the transformer, at least one of the numbers should be 300209-6. Tho with Magnavox I wouldn't bet on anything. I believe you have a good chance of getting the transformer, but did anything else go up in smoke with it.

Bill,

I don't believe anything else was fried except the tranformner. You got the number right on the transformer. It is 300209-6-606-8-06. Do you know how I can get ahold of a replacement tranformer?

12/31/2004 9:35:53 PMBill
Kevin, I believe one way is to get parts is on radio related sites allowing you to post wanted ads. One is Antique Radio. Check the links on this site. Do a search. Hammond Transformer might have one that will work. You could even end up with a parts set from your area. Also, I don't think Magnavox changed the specs on the power transformer that much over the production time of the Astro-Sonic. Part numbers, yes. Of course it needs to fit, mount right. I have a 300252-1, secondaries 27-0-27 and 6. If you send me the dimensions, bsrhicks at yahoo dot com I'll compare. We'll go from there.

Bill,

I tried to send you email but it failed at the address you gave me. The dimensions of the transformer are as follows:

Metal plates measure 2 5/8” (H) x 2 3/16” (W) x 1 1/8” thick

Mounting plates holes (4) are 1 ¾” apart

There are also a total of 7 wires coming from the transformer.

I tried looking at Hammond for one but don't know what the specs are for the one I have. Do you have that information?

1/2/2005 8:20:02 PMBill
I see...Sorry about that Kevin. E-mail is shedradios at yahoo dot com. Your transformer primary is 117 VAC @ .18A AC, secondaries are 54 VAC CT @ .22A DC and 6.3 VAC @ .45A AC per parts list. The dimensions on yours are same as the one I have. Same number of leads.

Bill,

I finally hooked up the new transformer and everything works great. The one you sold me had the same color wires so it was easy to re-connect. Thanks for your help.
