I'm a total novice so please excuse my ignorance. I'm trying to outfit a Landrover for expedition use in remote areas and want to equip it with a transcever that has a range of at least several hundred miles, What am I looking at ,what do I need??

Hi Neal, This might seem like answering a question with a question but where are you going? If you were going through the center of Australia you'd hire a transceiver for the Flying Doctor service. They are available to buy or short term hire. I assume in other areas such as Africa you'd find similar situations. In cases like this I'd contact the government tourism authority concerned for local advice. If you're going to remote parts of the US perhaps a 27 MHz. CB with a good aerial system would do the job. Another possibility is a satelite phone. If you can give some more information indicating where you're likely to go you might get answers from people who've been in the same area. You could also get advice from the various 4 wheel drive and off road clubs. Sounds like great fun (got a spare seat?) : ) Don Black.

This expedition we are planning to run the Baja, future expeditions might include Central America, and Canada/Alaska. Thought of satelite phone but right now a bit too expensive if a radio of some sort would do the job. Landrover in a defender 110 could always squeeze one more in it.: Hi Neal, This might seem like answering a question with a question but where are you going? There are many "10 meter" rigs that could get you farther than a CB, especially with a "linear" of about 100 watts, but you would need to be a licensed ham operator to use one legally, even in a foreign country; not to mention you are also subject to operating restrictions of Mexico.

Don's plan is a simple one, and in most respects easier, but limited to the extent of existing infrastructure. If you want to avoid getting up in details, contact a local radio club near you. Many are listed at the ARRL website, and you can take the exams in a very short period of time.

Budget seems to be a consideration, so your best chances of finding suitable equipment might be to check the "QTH" list.
