Volume control problem
10/8/2004 4:01:33 AMBrian
I have a Western Air Patrol model 6-M3T tombstone with AM and SW. It seems to play on maximum volume regardles of the position of the volume control. I've mesured the ohms of the volume control pot and get a min. of 0 kohms and a maximum of 191 kohms. I have recently replaced all paper caps as well as the electrolytics. I have checked some of the resistors and they all check out within tolorance. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Brian:
Here is your procedure:
1. Measure the R of the volume pot between the 2 OUTSIDE terminals ----it should be 1 meg or so and should not vary with the rotation of the shaft. If it measures open then your pot is bad and must be replaced.
2. If your pot is good, then make sure the bottom of the pot (right hand terminal with the shaft facing you) goes to ground.

This pot acts as a voltage divider in that the position of the wiper determines how much audio signal is applied to the audio amp stage - the audio amp grid should be connected to the center of the pot through a cap and the top of the control receives all of the detected audio from the receiver circuits. Your pot is not "voltage dividing" which means that it is either not grounded, open, or connected incorrectly.
Tom.
