GM Signal Seeker mechanism

Hello All,
I'm working on a 1954 Delco car radio with a signal seeker. When it gets to the end of the band the return solenoid tries to pull the pointer back but has trouble. Does anyone have a few pointers on where to lubricate the mechanism so the solenoid has an easier time pulling the pointer back to the begining. I can pull it to the end with my fingers, but you can't do that when the covers are on, of course. At the begining of the band I have to give it an extra push to get the return solenoid to shut off. Is there an adjustment for that too?

All paper and filter capacitors, buffer capacitor and vibrator have all been replaced and the radio operates very well.

Please help.

Thanks,

Dave...

If I remember correctly you need about 18 amps to operate the signal seeker, most power supplies don't provide enough power to operate these. Try the radio on a 12 volt battery and see if it operates properly.

Easyrider8,
I have a 50+ amp variable power supply. This is a giant monster power supply. I plenty of current.
This is a mechanical problem. I can manually tune to the point where the piece on the gear presses on the switch. When the plunger is all the way down inside the solenoid as far as it can go, the gear is not around far enough to push on the switch and shut off the return solenoid.
I am asking is there an adjustment so that the plunger has a little further to go on that end. If I can adjust it back a little bit, it will then it will be able to pull the gear all the way around. I'll check my Sams car radio books.

Thanks,

Dave...

Hello All,
I found the directions for adjusting the return solenoid in SAMS AR-3, Set 145, folder 8.

Easyrider8,
I do agree though that the car battery works best for powering antique car radios.
I only have a 20 amp fuse in my power supply and when I turned up the voltage high enough so I would have 6 volts when the return solenoid was turned on, it took out the fuse. So I better charge up my 6 volt car battery.
I have adjusted the solenoid so that when it is all the way in it can move the gear far enough to shut itself off.
