Hello. I am about as novice as it get when it comes to this. My grandmother just gave me possibly what is called a console radio/phonograph. It is rather large, about the size of a cedar chest. Great looking unit, GE is the manuf. It powers up, but all I get is a hum out of the radio. Anyone with any smarts know what might be going on here? I know, I am pretty clueless as to what I've just gotten myself into by accepting this as a gift! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

If its quite a loud hum, certainly one would expect a deterioration of the units power filter capacitor(s) with time and inactivity. Explore the units innards and come up with a model number and we may be able to research and give more exacting information.
