Hi,just picked up a Coronado console AM/SW. The paper ID label on the back of the chassis is missing. I'm guessing late thirties. Tube line up is 5Y3,6K6, 6F5G, 6J5, 6K7, 6A8, and 6U5.It has a slide rule dial, each side of the dial is a half circle, tuning eye on left and band indicator on right. also has push button tuning in addition to manual tuning. Thanks in advance for any help. Tom

You can greatly improve the audio by replacing that 6K6G with a 6V6G. The 6V6 draws more B current, though. The output transformer and field coil shouldn't get any warmer than they normally do. If so, go back to the 6K6G. Also, the filament of the 6V6 draws more current. If the power transformer gets too warm, discontinue use. The radio should be operated for an hour and a half for each tube if a temperature check is to be made (with your hand). With some radios, switching to a 6V6 does not work well due to different cathode biasing needs. There will be distortion in the audio. If you are going for all original, you may not want to change the cathode resistor. I am suggesting the tube change simply because a 6K6 is kind of a low power tube for a consol. The 6V6 will give clearer treble and deeper bass. I have changed several 6K6 and 6F6 operated radios to 6V6 tubes with no modification to the radio. You cannot do this with every radio.

Just a suggestion for what it is worth.

Thomas
