RCA Victor A-108 Console
4/28/2004 7:50:49 PMErik Blomenberg
Hello all,

I am new here, and would love some advice from those experienced in the restoration of these old consoles.

I inherited my Great-Grandfathers RCA Victor. It is a model A-108, and I have the original owners manual, several sets of Victor 78's etc.

I am planning on restoring it to "as-new" condition and have several questions. First, is there someplace (other than nostalgiaair) that I can find more information on the unit.

I am also interested in anyplace that might have NOS parts for this baby. I am assuming the electrolytic caps (or oil filled...whatever the case may be) are dry. The units lights come on, and I know it worked (somewhat) as recently as the early '90s.

I appreciate any information you could give me. Thanks in advance!!

Erik

Hi Eric

You could start with AES, www.tubesandmore.com or PTOP, www.oldradioparts.com . Both sell replacement parts.

Nostalgiaair should have schematics. You have the owners manual. Other than that what information are you looking for?

Norm

Thanks for your reply Norm!

I guess I am just interested in any information, like when it was made, how much it cost, where it was made, anything along those lines. What I have is the "instruction manual" but it doesn't contain much information regarding specifications and such.

I will take a look at the links you suggested, and already found the schematics on this site.

Any info on what can be done to restore the flaking clear coat over the mahogany? It seems to be a lacquer of some sort. I would like to keep the original decals etc.. intact on the inside of the cabinet.

Thanks again!

WELL. Not much came of this thread. :-)

I have an A-108 too. My father bought it for our family about 1951. I don't know where it was made, but almost certainly on the east coast?

I don't know if Eric is still around this forum, but I can vouch for the A-108. It's a great looking and sounding unit. It served our family from when I was a little boy all the way through high school.

Mine sits unrestored in the family room and is next in line for restoration now that I have a better grasp of tube amplification and wood refinishing.

I'm not too far off topic here... the A-108 features a dandy AM/FM radio with an attractive dial. The amp has 6v6GT's and they can really push that 12" speaker, believe me.

If anyone's interested, I can post some pictures.
