Check John McPhersons answer to a question on EICO 2050, 11-6-99. If you buy a new transformer it will cost $40 or $50. Often junk radios are available for a couple dollars where you can remove a transformer.

My Dad is VE3AAN from Ontario, now 79 years old and does not have internet. He is also building up an S-40 radio and is looking for a source of tuning slugs. I am not certain what he is going to do with this old unit once he is finished. Possibly the Hammond Museum in Guelph Ontario? I have ordered a copy of the Manuals from Chuck Dachis. Keeps my Dad's hands in the the Ham equipment.
