Philco 50-992 Resistor replacement
4/9/2004 4:10:22 PMGreg
Hello:
I need some assurance advice on this model in regard to a large resistor the size of a cockroach.
Its colors are (from the top edge) Yellow, violet, orange, black, then spaced from the first four above, another yellow.
Could someone please give me a color combo different from that described above that will work as a replacement?
Thank you,
Greg
4/9/2004 4:18:26 PMWhoops! The model is 50-922

Hi Greg

Baby or large cockroach? Yellow, violet, orange is 47K or 47,000 ohms when it comes to resistors.

I think you may be actually describing a capacitor? There are caps marked like this across the AC line. They short and explode, breaking apart. If this is the case the original value was .047 @ 400 volts. The last yellow you mentioned indicates 400 volts.

You can use .047 @ 630 volt for replacement. There are specific caps for use across the line but any modern type will be far better than the original.

4/9/2004 7:52:54 PMgreg still need a bit of info
Say, I went to radio shack and bought three packages:
1) 47 OHM 1/2 watt
2) 470 ohm 1/2 watt
3)4.7 ohm 1/2 watt
Will any of the above be a good replacement for the 47,000 ohm needed for the above Philco?
Do they mark these resistor packages different today than in the 1940s?
Thanks,

Hey guys,
I have found a Yellow, violet, yellow resistor in spare parts box. Is this the correct resistor for 47,000?

Hi Greg

Yellow, violet, yellow is 470K. None of the others are corrent for 47K either. You will need Yellow (4), violet (7), orange (4 zero's).

I still think your original component might be a capacitor, with those colors? Resistors have a carbon center. A capacitor will be made of foil and insulation.

Color code values are the same today as in the 1930's. Only shape of components are different.
