Any help would be much appreciated
The loud hum is from the electrolitics caps being bad. Running the radio without replacing them could damage the radio. Your best bet is to see is there is a radio club in your area or books on restoring old radios.
Hope this helps.

:I have a old 1939 Zenith radio (7S342) and finally pulled it out of storage and want to fix it up. The cabniet is in great condition other than the knobs which are all there but broken. None of the knobs are connected inside. Will they even work if connected? The AM works but not sure how to check the 2 short wave bands? New to this. Has a loud hum but have read what I need to so to fix this problem. What kind of antenna do I need to connect to the radio? Has none connected at this time.

:The antenna should just be a 10 to 20 foot wire from the antenna lead.
