Silvertone 9057A?
3/27/2004 12:57:23 PMSincere
Hi, I just picked up an old console unit, the Silvertone 9057A (I think, could be 59A or 60A, the wood is too abused to tell which kinda it was). I checked the resources, and despite the massive amount of Silvertone information, my numbers were all missing. I'm looking to fix it up. Right now it powers up, but the FM signals are coming in weakly and the volume levels are distorted. The record player also needs a cartdige/needle, for which I searched for the part online and found nothing. Any info on this would be appreciated, and though I know it may not be quite an antique, I would like to fix it up as best possible. Thanks.

Just some more details, the chassis is 528.52233, AM radio is not working, there are two 10 or 12 inch speakers, and two tweeters inside the cabinet. The turntable is a Silvertone Syntronic, for which I am also unable to find out anything. Any help appreciated.

Hi,
You might have some numbers transposed in the chassis number. Probably it should read 528.53322. Set is covered by Sams Photofact Set 430 Folder 13. Output tubes are two 6BQ5/EL84...not bad. Speakers are two 12 inch and two four inch. The record changer is 528.56400 or 528.56410. The phono cartridge can be an Astatic 13-TB.

Bill-

Thanks for the response! You were right, I goofed on the number, i transposed them in my mind between running downstairs and checking and typing them up. I appreciate the info. Do you think I should buy the photofact sheet? What exactly does it provide? Also, any idea where to pick up that cartridge? I haven't been able to turn anything up online for that specific model. Also, all of the knobs are broken or missing. Any shot of finding these? It is a dusty beast, I need to clean it out, as well. I'm hoping that that may help with some of the line noise and poor radio reception? Can you recommend a cleaning solution as well? Sorry for the barrage of questions, but this was an impulse buy and I may be over my head here... I greatly appreciate your help.

:I've found a 13T cartridge, will this work? What would the difference be? Thanks...

Hi Sincere,
I don't know about the cartridge replacement as I don't have x-reference data. The Photofact folder provides service data such as the parts list and schematic. You may need it. It depends on your experience working on electronic equipment. Still best to have. Your problems are more than dust and missing knobs. You or someone will need to replace some electronic parts. This might get a little hairy and expensive. I personally believe you should reexamine your position on this Silvertone. I hope you didn't pay but a few bucks for it. Based on your description it would not be worth the effort to me. Even if money wasn't a factor this isn't one to spend it on. It's improbable the cartridge will take care of the phono. You could get the radio fixed and still have problems with phono. I bump into people all the time who think a tube or cartridge is all it takes to get a radio or old phonograph working. Once they hear a few more details, they're ready to give up their quest. And I'm sure some go away thinking I'm full of beans. If you are going to start restoring old radios you need to get some basics. There's many sites on the web offering information on repairing radios and phonographs. This site has some good data and links. Just search them out. I can copy the Photofact and mail to you if you are still going to try and fix the Silvertone. E-mail shedradios**yahoo.com. Others may have a different views on this and I hope they offer them too.
