Pilot Radio - problems with the model and the phonograph
11/1/1999 6:42:39 PMMartin Santos

I got a Pilot radio - a brand scarce here in Brazil, nobody knows it or have schematic of most of models of this factory. I would like to know the model (and perhaps get the schematic) and get a solution about the phonograph.

It is a table radio (Broadcast-short wave) and phonograph, little. The phonograph has only 78rpm, and the needle is made of steel, the same of gramophones. The brand of the arm is "ASTATIC".

The radio has 6 tubes: 5Y3, 6V6, 6SQ7, 6SK7, 6SA7 and one that don't have any marcation, but is the first radio frequence amplifier.

Behind the cabinet there is just marked "221", in the wood, but I didn't find any thing about a Pilot model with this number.

The problem with the phonograph is that I can't get any sound from it. The radio is working OK, and the I got sound with another phonograph when conected in the jack if this one.

I don't know this type of cartridge (first time that i get one!), but the coil is OK, because there is resistence in it.

I will be glad if anyone has an idea about waht I can do in this case, and can know what model it is (and what tube is the onde without mark!)

Thanks a lot!

Hi Martin

Astatic made mostly crystal cartridges which go bad over time. Are you sure the pickup has resistance on an ohm meter? Crystal cartridges do not show resistamce.

The unknown RF tube would be another 6SK7. They are used for RF and IF stages unless the radio has a different type socket.

I will let you know if I can find a schematic of a Pilot radio with those tubes.

Martin, check under schematics on nostalgiaair.org. Model T44 (Brazil) matches your tube lineup.

Hi Norm

Thanks a lot for your help!

I tryed again the resistance of the cartrifge and the ohm meter accused 12 ohms. Is this a normal resistance of a coil, or can be the resistance only of the ables, etc?

I will try to put a 6SK7GT in the place of the unknow tube. The metal type didn't work there, anyway.

Thanks again!

Martin

Hi Martin

If you have a coil type of phono pickup it will not work with your radio. The magnetic pickups generate very low voltage, a few milivolts and require additional amplification in the radio.

Some crystal cartridges can generate more than a volt. Could you have a crystal cartridge that is shorted inside? The 12 ohms is very low for a magnetic cartridge. Does the resistance very as you move the cartridge?

The 6SK7 and 6SK7GT should be interchangeable. Did the Pilot Model T44 schematic on nostalgiaair.org look like your radio?
