Question for Poston Drake re Philco 46-1203 code 125
1/18/2004 2:51:55 PMBruce M.
I noticed that in an earlier posting you said that you had the original Philco service buletins for this model. Are they for the code 125 version? The code 125 has a 50X6 tube and the other version has a 50Y6 instead. Thanks for any help.

Hi Bruce

Just a quick comment. 50Y6 and 50X6 are electrically the same. Only difference is type of base.

Hi Bruce,
I don't have a Philco production change bulletin for the Code 125 version, but to the best of my knowledge the only change was the 50X6 rectifier tube and socket instead of the 50Y6 as on earlier versions. And as Norm has noted, these tubes are electrically the same.
It is interesting why Philco made this change. Of course it could have been simply for reasons of cost or tube availability. But there might have been another reason. For the Philco 46-1201, which is a 5-tube radio/phono somewhat similar to your 46-1203, a Code 128 version was issued which included the same rectifier tube change. Here is an interesting quote from the Philco production change bulletin for the model 46-1201, Code 128:
"Code 128 employs a permanent-magnet speaker, and a filter system like Code 127 except that a 50X6 rectifier tube is used in place of the 50Y6. Before Code 128 it was possible for the tuning condenser to have a high potential if the 7A8 and 50X6 tubes were accidentally interchanged."
