Oscilliscope help! Please!
10/29/1999 4:19:34 PMScott Cash
Hi,
I just recently found my dad's old oscilliscope,
but I don't know how to use it (if it even works).
He might not even remember how to use it, so if anyone
has some pointers on how to use an oscilliscope or has
some extra time to teach a dummy on the subject, please
E-Mail me at: srcash@yahoo.com
Any help would be much appreciated, as right now, it
is just collecting dust!

Scott

I scanned a few pages from a course on oscilloscopes and have emailed to you.

Hi Scott, You don't say how old the oscilloscope is but it uses similar parts to a TV or Radio and if it's been unused for some time it might have developed some faults, in particular electrolytic capacitors can short the high voltage lines. Before you apply power it would be a good idea to remove the cover and check the resistance of the B+ lines for shorts and watch the "innards" for any sign of distress when it's turned on. Hopefully all will be well. Don Black.

Scott, the place to go for help with scopes is the greatest scope
manufacturer of all time, Tektronix. Go to their Website,
tek.com and click on "SUPPORT"; then click on "OSCILLOSCOPES";
then click on "APPLICATION NOTES" (on the left side of the screen);
finally, click on "XYZs OF OSCILLOSCOPES", the first entry in the main
window. This publication is available in print and is updated to their
newer scopes every few years (the first edition used the 2213 and I didn't check to see what they're
using now). Yes, they use modern triggered-sweep scopes, but the general
information is there. You may even be able to cast around and snag
an older edition that someone may have. Their publicatino "Basic Oscilloscope
Operation" predates the "XYZ .." series and used the T921 as the instrument
to demo. It was publication AX-3725-1 produced back in 1979.

The nice thing about the web site is that the information is right there and
you don't have to order it if you don't want to. Their application notes are free,
so don't be shy about ordering. You more than likely have a recurrent-sweep
scope that has "synchronization" rather than triggered sweep. The horizontal
is probably driven by a sweep circuit with the knob labeled in frequency rather
than time. And you'll be lucky if the vertical system is calibrated in volts.
But that won't keep the scope from being useful, especially at frequencies below
5 MHz. You'll just have to learn all about it from asking questions. Once you have the
actual Make and Model number, it'll help out a lot. And you can then search around
for a manual ... and for learning, it doesn't have to match yours. Any manual on
a recurrent sweep scope will help out a lot if it has operating instructions.
