converting a 6A8 application to use a 6SA7
9/23/2003 7:33:21 PMBill Beyrer
I am working on a Crosley 828, It uses a 6A8 as a "modulator". Has anyone tried to build a coverter socket to use a 6SA7 in place of the 6A8. If so does the substitution work well? I am a little confused about the pin reconfiguration so any help would be appreciated. The radio is in fair shape and I am restoring it for my mother-in-law -- no jokes please.

I am using a 6K7 in place of the 6U7 ( 1st IF) and have noticed increased performance. So I thought I might try this substituion as well.

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill

Using a 6K7 in place of 6U7 is fine. No changes are needed.

Not worth using a 6SA7 in place of 6A8 unless you don't have a working 6A8? It takes rewiring of the socket and notice grids aren't tied together the same way. In addition top cap wire of your 6A8 needs to be connected to pin #8 on a 6SA7.

Your 6A8 will have 3 positive voltages, grid #2, (grid #3 & #5) and the plate. 6SA7 has (grid #2 & #4) positive and plate. Only 2 pins positive.
