Crosley 11-120U with bad reception
9/22/2003 10:32:27 PMJeff
I am working on a Crosley 11-120U "dashboard" and have run into a problem. As the radio powers up, it sounds good, then the station strength fades and static takes over. If I dial down the voltage on my variac, the strong reception returns. I have changed all the tubes, recapped the set, and checked all the resistors. When checking voltages, the only socket voltage that seems off is on the IF Amplifier, 12BA6, socket 5 which runs to the 2nd IF transformer. Voltage there is 0, and should be around 88V. Any ideas? Thanks!

Bad IF transformer ?? ... coil opening or internal short ??

Jeff, I can't seem to access the schematic, but if you've got one, check for a fixed capacitor inside the I.F. can. Good Luck.

Jeff-

I am President of the New Mexico Radio Collectors Club here in Albuquerque. I also collect and repair antique radios. You might check the 12BA6 to see if it has any internal shorts. Try a mutual conductance (dynamic) tube tester if you or anyone you know has one. It puts a signal on the grid and measures it's output on the plate. Also beware of any wax paper capacitors. They should be replaced as they lose tolerance and eventually short out. I always replace all of them as they can create an electrical fire hazard.
