RCA 6-T-86
9/8/2003 10:38:47 AMKevin
Hello,

I recently purchased a combination TELEVISION and PHONOGRAPH from an estate sale...the Model on the back says 6-T-86.

There is a record player for 45s and another for 33s on the right, and the television and speaker on the left.

Can you please tell me where i can find out more information on this model (year, history, etc.) and also any repair places in the Pittsburgh, PA area?

Also, how do I restore the beautiful finish without hurting it?

Thank you very much!

Hi Kevin,
Your RCA model 6-T-86 is a 1950 model. It was designated as the "Rutland" and was a top-of-the-line set for that year. It includes a 16-inch television receiver, an AM/FM radio, the two record changers as you mention, and a 12-inch PM loudspeaker. This was shortly after the introduction by RCA of the 45 rpm record, and RCA had not yet begun to manufacture 3-speed record changers. Thus their phonos of that period used a 33rpm/78rpm changer as well as a separate 45rpm changer. This beast uses a total of 30 tubes and the cabinet weighs 177 pounds, as I am sure you are well aware!

Schematics and service data are covered in SAMS Photofacts #122-8 and #134-9, and also in RCA factory Service Data 1950 No. T15. If you need copies of these contact me by email and I can supply them.

Your best bet for service would be to contact an antique radio/TV club in the Pittsburgh area, who might be able to give you some advice. You might check the website of Antique Radio Classified (www.antiqueradio.com) which has an extensive listing of clubs and contact information.

As to the original finish, you want to be a gentle as possible. I would suggest an initial cleaning with Murphy's oil soap using a slightly damp (not wet) rag or sponge. As you work, dry each section immediately with a towel to prevent moisture from remaining on the surface. After it is thoroughly dry, do another cleaning with mineral spirits or paint thinner to remove any oil or wax residue. At that point you could touch up any scratches with an appropriate wood stain or furniture repair crayon. Then apply one or more coats of a good-quality furniture paste wax and buff to a shine.

I just recovered a RCA 6-T-86 in great shape from an old house. What is a reasonable value to sell this?
