Friend of mine gave me a early model Philco 70 (no AVC) that his wife's grandparents had in their attic - what a find! Mostly all there ( missing one knob and escutcheon - we're going to look back in the attic). I cleaned the cabinet and it looks great. Opened it up and found it to be original fantastic shape - except the speaker. So I rigged it up to another field coil speaker and dim-bulbed it up for a while with 25 watt and she slowly started to light with 40 watt bulb. Someone had put a 10 MFD from speaker B+ to ground, incorrect(guess the did this for the buzz due to two main caps dried out condition, but I replaced it with another as is and the radio came to life after full voltage- good sound - tested all tubes and they are fine too. I need to replace the lytics back to specs etc - but I am in need of a cone kit if someone knows where I can get one with the spider. Voice coil and audio transformer is good, and after peeling back the field coil to internal connections I discovered it is good too ( green corrosion at the main connections was the culprit here) - yee haa (how to get that coil out of there - press the post out??? Hmmm.
Thanks from NC - Barry
