Schematic for Radio Shack Digital MultiMeter

I need a schematic for Radio Shack Cat #22-174B. I had the meter on resistance and connected it to voltage. The resistance ranges no longer work but everything else does. Anyone know where I can find one?

Hi Joe,
First of all check the fuses inside. Most likely that is the only problem. There is a separate mini ceramic fuse for the ohms function, to protect against just what occurred in your case. That would explain why the resistance function won't work, but the other functions are OK. The #22-174B is a good little DMM for the price, I have been using one for a couple of years. It was still being sold by Radio Shack until very recently, so they might be able to supply a manual if you contact them. If not, I have an owner's manual and could send you a copy, but it does not contain a complete schematic and no parts list of any kind.

:I think my problem is deeper..the fuse was bad but replacing it didn't fix the problem. I have probably burned a chip or another component..I need to find a tech or a schematic still.

Hi,
While I really have very little to say favorably about Radio Shack, they do have good selection of manuals online (free too) at their web site. I know they have all of the scanners from way back, but they should have test equipment and such too.

One note, with many of those digital items, chips are often proprietary, and the replacement cost can be close to that of a new meter.

How do you zero the resistance on this meter? I get 1.2 ohms when touching the meter leads together and need this to be zero. I tried pressing the TEST button, holding it, etc and still have 1.2 ohms. Everything else works OK.

:YOU'RE MEASURING THE RESISTANCE OF THE LEADS ETC AND PROBABLY SOME CONTACT RESISTANCE OF THE JACKS WHERE THE LEADS PLUG IN. JUST SUBTRACT IT OUT FROM YOUR MEASUREMENT OR MOVE UP TO AN INSTRUMENT WITH MATH OR CALCULATING ABILITY THAT WILL DO THAT FOR YOU OR EVEN BETTER YET GET A METER WITH "FOUR WIRE" AKA "KELVIN" MEASURING TECHNIQUE THAT BY ITS VERY NATURE OF ITS DESIGN WILL REMOVE THE LEAD RESISTANCE.

See if this parts list helps you :

Notice that its manual is also listed.

On the second query on the OHMs question . One would naturally expect the reading to be the resistance of the leads.
To confirm that, if the leads are identical and of same length. Unplug one lead and do your ohms test with inly one lead with its tip end connected to the meter jack proper… if the reading is about half… that was it. I typically only see zeroing available on the older VTVMs or on the higher dollar u/p based digital meters. So what I typically do is just subtract the lead resistance value from my readings.
