RCA Model 29K - HELP!
6/25/2003 11:25:52 PMSam Brown
Gentlemen,
I recently acquired an RCA 29K console. It was in good condition;whoever on closer inspection I realized someone just filled the tube sockets with a hodgepodge of various tubes and the power transformer was burned out (tar dripping).
Problem is:
I replaced all tubes and caps and tranformer and looked for any visable wiring problems.
When I applied power only the rectifier tube lit and the twist lock cap rated 10mfd@400/10mfd@400/20mfd@25 got hot immediately. As my knowledge and equipment is limited and this is getting expensive do you have any suggestions to move me forward. incidentally there is NO SOUND. Help is appreciated

Hi Sam

Replace the electrolytic filter cap that you noticed getting hot if you haven't already. It will be less expensive getting individual sections than finding the right can. Be sure to watch polarity. This cap was probably responsible for destroying the original power transformer.

You can find a schematic here:

Tubes are powered by a 6 volt winding on the power transformer. Check solder connections. They draw high current and depend on good connections.
