need help with GE Model 250?
6/23/2003 7:43:54 AMCraig
I've come across a portable, rechargeable GE AM radio that I'd like to
restore in time for Christmas. It's in a metal case, with 4 dials (tone,
on/off/charge, volume, tuning), and "Broadcast Kilocycles General Electric"
are on the face. It has capacitors made by Solar Mfg Corp and Aerovox Corp.
Any help in identifying and steering me in the right direction with regard
to restoring it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Craig

You might want to start here with a schematic.

There is another page after this one. Change 15-32 to 15-33.

Craig: I have a GE 250 I picked up at a flea market about a year ago. The case was in pretty good shape, but looks can be deceiving....I did what I could to try and restore it (checked/replace tubes and caps), but it operates off of wet battery which plugs inside the back of the unit. The battery was missing in mine, and since it looks like it is made specially for this unit, I don't think I'll have any luck finding one. According to the instruction manual I located, you plug this thing in to AC and it charges the DC wet cell battery, but it operates off of the battery whenever it's turned on (the AC only charges the battery). The unit also contains a 2 volt, 7 pin vibrator that's needle in a haystack if you're looking for one. Fortunately, I got the vib to work in this one with a little advice from some friends. I tried using a battery eliminator without much success, but I may not have had enough amps in my b/e to light the tubes. Anyway, I never really finished with this one, so I'm interesed in hearing about what kind of success you have. Does your's still have the original battery?
