Stewart-Warner Ferrodyne model R-145 Beginner need help restoring
6/16/2003 8:40:25 PMJoe

Hi.
I just recently was given a Stewart-Warner Ferrodyne floor model radio, model# R-145. When I turn it on some of the tubes light up but that's it. I know for sure the speaker does not work. How or can I test the tubes? Where do I start? I checked the net for information, the library, radio repair shops and have found nothing. Has you can see I don't know anything about these types of radios. But I am really keen on restoring this radio. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Hi Joe,
You can find the schematics here at NA. http://www.nostalgiaair.org/NostalgiaAir/Riders/showinfo.asp?PATH=STW&IMG=_STW_7-15.gif&INF=R145
You can change the 7-15 to 7-16 and get the second page. Your radio was made in 1936 I believe according to the schematics. First thing you will need to do is get yourself a tube tester of some sort. If nothing else, try Ebay for one. Just starting out you might not want to spend to much for one. You could get a emission tester for under $50.00 bucks that would give you a idea about the condition of the tubes. Secondly, you should probably test or replace the electrolytic capacitors. Most but not all radio collectors replace all the caps as they leak or short out and could cause harm to your transformer.
Collecting and working on old radios can be additive so watch out ;-)
Take care
Bud

Hi Joe,
A tube tester is nice, as Bud has suggested. But since you don't have one right now, check around in your local area for an antique radio club or even a HAM operators club. You may very likely find someone with a tube tester who would be glad to check your tubes at no charge. Quite a few TV/electronics repair shops still have tube testers and this might be another possibility. If you do buy a tester, I suggest you purchase it from a reliable source who will guarantee it is working. Tube testers have their own problems, and if you buy one which needs repairs you are no better off than you are right now.

You might also want to check out "Phil's Old Radios" at www.antiqueradio.org/index.html This is a great website, and answers a lot of questions for those new in the hobby. In particular, look in the sections "The Radio Beginner" and "Radio Wrinkles" for some helpful tips to get you started.

There are also some good books available. "Antique Radio Restoration Guide, 2nd Edition" by David Johnson (Krause Publications, 1992) is a great book for the beginner in the hobby. It is available through bookstores, as well as online sources.
