Zenith Y600 Transoceanic case touch-up help.

Hello all,
I have a couple of y600's that are in need of a little attention on the cases. A couple of spots of missing vinyl on the corners and general dull looking. Any advice of either or both of these issues would be very much appreciated.
Thank you all in advance.

Hi,
Some of the TO's were leather, which can be cleaned up with saddle soap, and buffed with a soft cloth, and some scratches can be hidden with shoe polish of the same color as your case. If you are absolutely sure yours is vinyl, saddle soap will not harm it; the saddle soap will clean it too, but if the shine does not come back on vinyl, apply a little boot polish, or shoe polish, or just plain paste wax to bring up the shine.

As for missing spots, short of adding brass or chrome corners, or even a leather corner of the same shape as the brass corners, there is really not much you can piece in that will not be noticed. There are those patch products advertised on TV, and they do work to some extent (life expectancy of the repair is the real issue), you could try one of those on a lesser set first, and it should work. I have seen a number of autopart stores that have carried such a product, otherwise I think there is even a website for those TV ad gimicky items- www.asseenontv.com???? just guessing on the website- I don't watch much TV, seems all I get when I do spend any time watching it are commercials.

Thank you John,
I will try the boot polish! Sounds like a wonderful idea. Will also check out the vinyl patch kit you recommended. The radios look worse than what they really are. The dirt and dust on them is worse that the corner cuts. They should clean up nicely and the polish idea is wonderful! Thanks again.

One thing to try before the shoe polish is black shoe dye (the "Kiwi" brand you see in the stores with the polish). It will make the case an overall black color, covering up blemishes, etc. Then follow it up with the shoe polish.
If you still have some covering on the corners that can be glued over the corner (even strands) that will help. The black shoe dye will help make these areas less noticeable. If the covering is really bad, you can recover the case, it is not as hard as it sounds. Great Northern Antiques in Minneapolis and Cayce Sound in Cayce, SC sell covering material that is reasonably close to the original (it does have a fake "grain" on it) that is thin and easy to work with. Great Northern does have a website, but I seem to have misplaced the address

Thanks Kent,
One case may just need a revinyl job but before I do that I will try the KIWI liquid under the shoe polish. Will determine from there. The other one I have should be just fine with the method you fellows have described. I also have an old Motorola Diplomat that had a very good case and I just tried the shoe polish on it and it now looks brand new! Thanks for the tips and taking the time to help me out.

: I forgot to mention one other thing. For gouges and bad corners, wood putty works to smooth things over before using leather dye and shoe polish. Supposedly these techniques are what museums use.
