console radio problems
5/23/2003 12:20:45 AMSEAN
: hello, I have 2 problems with this radio. First one is there is no model number on this radio((I'm not sure who really made it.) The second problem is that the last two transformers be the 71a' are open. 9 tube radio, and the tubes are 5 of the 26's, one 24, two 71a's , and one 80. Tubes are along the back of the chassis. Power supply is below the chassis in a seperate container. Riveted piece of metal on one of the tuning condenser covers says "radiotrope Neutrodyne electric reciever. serial #c-1126 Licensed under R.C.A. hazeltine and latour patents. Mfd by united states radio and television corp. chicago.
The last two transformers are not like the rest or the usuall wire wrapped around a cardboard cylinder like substance. The last one looks like a regular iron core transformer and the other one looks like there is spaces inbetween the iron plates like they left out some of the plates. How do I go about finding a replacement or should I rewind these .........I have never tried winding anything yet. Not sure what to do with this radio. I only paid $50 dollars for it so it cant be a total wash.

Hi SEAN

Your radio has open Audio Interstage Transformers. This is common with these early radios. Replacements can be purchased from AES, tubesandmore.com and Play Things Of Past, oldradioparts.com . The replacements will be smaller and similar to Stancor A53-C.

There are schematics for US Radio & Television Corp here on nostalgiaair:

:Hello, I have found that a model 80 has all the tubes I have except for the 24. model 80 shows a 27. I dont think it matters though. I am not sure how to select the audio interstage transformers for the radio I have. Is it the same as selecting a output transformer?

Hi SEAN

Use AES part number P-T156 shown on page 24 of their catalog. Also check Play Things Of Past. They may have better prices.

Hi Sean

P-T156 will work for both audio interstage transformers. It has a center tapped secondary for push-pull output tubes. If you are lucky you can hide the replacements, under the chassis or under your original transformer covers if they have them?

Sean

Your second audio interstage transformer drives 71A grids. Someone may have already added a replacement?

The two outside wires, on secondary of the transformer, go to each grid, pin #3, of 71A's. Center tap will be grounded or go to a negative voltage depending on your radio circuit.

Primary will be connected to driver tube plate, pin #2. The other primary wire goes to B+.
