:Hello I have a Philco 46-1203. I just re capped it and the hum problem hasn't gone away. When on radio it is fine, perfectly quiet and sounds excellent. When I turn it onto record player and play a 78 however it has quite a hum. When I touch any metal part on the turntable at all the hum from the speaker gets VERY loud and nasty like something isn't grounded and sounds like I'm getting a shock but I'm not. The audio is coming out the speaker but very low.. I may have wired that part inside the cabinet back up wrong as I have no info for that part and there are a couple caps under there so if anyone has that info please email me or any ideas. Thanx.. The record needle is gold and the cartridge is a shure.
Above is a link to a schematic. Lots of hum is normal when touching the pickup. Reversing the power plug may improve the hum problem. The hot pickup sounds normal to me. Friction is high on 78 pickup needle since the downward force on the needle is high. Weak audio just means the pickup will need to be rebuilt.

:Oh, also, just notice that the gold pickup is very hot underneath the record player is this phono pickup supposed to get very hot??

As Richard says, hum when touching the cartridge is normal. But you should not be getting excessive hum when touching other metal parts of the turntable. Check the integrity of the leads from the cartridge to chassis, especially the grounded shielding and the 0.2mfd cap which connects this shielding to common negative.
