Pontiac (Delco?) Model 984248

Hello...I have a model 984248 from a 1949 Pontiac Silverstreak. The chassis is a bit rusty, and after I cleaned it out I plugged it in (to a 6volt car battery), it turns on, but there is no sound, not even vibrations from the speaker. Could it be a broken ground? Please help me out...

Probably a bad vibrator ... also you should be prepared to replace the buffer capacitor, filter caps, and other caps. Test the tubes, then should be ready to retry

Adam,
Use a good variable DC power supply rather than the car battery while you are checking the radio. Just a small drop in your battery can alter things a lot. The 1949 Pontiac was Neg ground.

Hi,
If you do run with a power supply, make sure it can deliver the 6 volts at 5 amps at least.

If it is still unresponsive, rap the vibrator against the heel of your shoe, and then try it. Some of the mechanical vibrators get just a little bit dirt on the contacts that will keep them from self starting.

A little bit "Rail Zip" will help with any contacts that show any corrosion.
