hello, i just purchased a zenith console 10s464 that seems to have been stored for a long time (the lacquer was totally faded). i replaced the electrolitycs and when i turn the set on the transformer overheats rightaway with an odd odor i ohmed out the transformer it is still good. icant see any obvious shorts. is it posible that the capacitors are shorted? thank you for any info

Hi Manual

Don't operate your radio with the transformer overheating. Once damaged, it will need replacement. Ohming a transformer may not find the problem.

Your radio uses 2 - 6X5G tubes. Pull these tubes. The radio won't operate but tube filaments will still light. With these tubes pulled your transformer should remain cool. It's already damaged if it's hot.

Yes, other capacitors can cause excessive current and transformer overheating. Your radio uses 2 - 6V6G tubes. If the capacitors connected to pin #5 are leaky they will cause tubes to draw too much current.

:Hi Manual
:thank you for info norm. i removed all tubes and turned set on and did not hear a sizzling sound and transformer did not heat up, i also had good voltages coming from transformer taps.when i first got radio i turned it on (plugged to test light) after a while i turned it on normally and was getting static from speaker, but i moved the radio and thats when this problem happened. when i get home i will do what you suggested and go from there once again i appreciate help
