wiper spring on variable capacitor
4/10/2003 10:08:06 AMJim Logan
I have a Silvertone 7037 that appears to be missing a wiper spring on one section of the variable capacitor. I think there is supposed to be a wiper which connects the rotor to the frame. One section has a bronze colored clip and the other does not. Does anyone know where I could find one or how I would go about making one?

Hi,
If it looks like there was one there originally, you can often steal one off of a scrap chassis.

Hi John

After looking at it some more I discovered the rotor and the stator are touching each other. Tuning down from the top of the range at about the mid point the resistance between rotor and stator drops from several megohms to a few ohms. There doesn't appear to be any adjustment available on the frame of the tuning capacitor. There is a nut on one end of the "axel". Any ideas? Spacers? Bend it? Tighten or lossen the nut? Thanks Jim

Hi,
I had a similar problem with my Setchell Carlson, and I had to do a couple things because there was more than one thing wrong with it. It was out of square primarily, and that was remedied by rapping the long end of the diamond on a table to make the frame square again. Usually this takes care of the matter when all fins start start touching at a certain point in travel. Then to prevent it from happening again, I checked tension on all screws and rivits to find the ones that had come loose.

The nut on the back does two things, 1) sets a preload on the bearing so the condensor rotor stays where you put it, and to a lesser extent it pushes the rotor forward as an assembly.
