substituting 6SL7’s for the 12AX7’s

Folks,

I was interested in substituting 6SL7’s for the 12AX7’s in the preamp section of a 5F6-A Bassman circuit. I’m a newbie here, and I was wondering if anyone might make any circuit change suggestions besides the obvious pin re-wiring?

Hi Mike

You can use a 6SL7GT for 12AX7 as long as filaments are wired in parallel. It's a lot of work as 6SL7GT requires an octal socket. A tube manual will show gain difference between tubes. In actual operation this difference won't be noticed.

Do you need a 12AX7? 12AX7 and a lot of other substitutes are common. Check a manual for tubes using "9A" basing.
