Calculation of coil inductance of a sweep generator
4/1/2003 12:44:28 AMRanjana Goswami
I have designed a beam sweeper where I will have to wind copper coils of 17SWG round a rectangular yoke made of steel whose length is 200mm, breadth 300mm and thickness 25mm.The coil will be wound over a length of
150mm.Total no of turns per coil per layer is 99 and total no. of layers is 17.So total no. of turns is 1683.What is the inductance of the coil in this case?
What formula are you using?

Hi,
There are a number of inductance calculators, and oftent hey are found by using a search engine for "Wheeler Formula", which is the formula's name that you are seeking.

You need to know the permeability of the steel core. Perhaps you could wind a test coil of a few turns and measure that. A wild guess would be 1 Henry.

There are several unknowns here:
1. What is the magnetic permeability of the core?
2. Is this core solid or laminated or powdered?
3. Are the layers close-wound?

When you say a "beam sweeper" is this an electron beam deflection coil? or as we say "Yoke"?
