Zenith resistor wattage

The main resistor rated at 88 ohms in the 8G005 model Y type chassis is not identified for wattage rating. Is 5 watts enough?

Hi Roberval

If that's the resistor off of the rectifier tube 5 watts is enough. Even a lower rating (2watts) would be ok. Believe the value may be 68 ohms? It's hard to read but 68 ohms is a standard value.

Be sure to replace filter caps and check your 117Z6GT tube. These capacitors or tube can cause this resistor to open.

Hi Norm,

Thanks for the information. My schematic is fairly clear and says R18 is 88 Ohms. I have combined two resistors in series to achieve that at 5 Watts. resistor gets hot quickly at power up. Capacitors are all new and I will double check the 117Z6GT. Probably that is the problem.

Can I put in a fuse to protect the resistor in case the tube becomes bad? If so what rating would you put on the fuse?

Hi Roberval

Using a 1 amp fuse is a good idea.

The resistor will be warm but if it gets hot quickly something is shorted. This resistor is in series with B+ in your radio. Be sure electrolytic caps aren't reversed. One lead will be marked with + or -. A shorted 117Z6GT could also be the problem.
