Zenith Trans Oceanic Capacitor Question
2/20/2003 2:24:21 PMJeff W
Hello,

There are what I would call "ganged" capacitors on the Zeniths. Reference H500 schematic C25, 26, 27 & 28. These are in an aluminum housing and rivited to the chassis. I have an H500 with one that someone changed, It appears right from the outside but has very wrong values stamped on it. They connected an external one as the replacement only had three inside (4 needed).
I haven't been able to find a direct replacement.
Q1. Is there a source for direct replacement?
Q2. Were these manufactured together to save space?
Q3. Will performance be affected if I replace the four internals with individual caps and tie them together as shown in the schematic? I see they share a common negative side. Not sure how/if they electronically interact as they seem to physically share one side.
Many Thanks
Jeff
PS I had troubles with alignment on a previous posting. This was another radio. Found my RCA signal generator had one weak & dying tube. It was changing output as I was through the alignment. Replacing tube a couple of resistors and recapping. Will calibrate too. Thanks for your help! Jeffrey

Hi,

to answer your questions in order,
1) There is limited production of replacements, they are available for AES (www.tubesandmore.com), and probably others too.
2) That type allowed for more efficient use of space primarily, and it cut down onproduction costs.
3) You will find no difference in overall performance if you replace each section with a new discrete unit hid under the chassis, or in the old can. It is far cheaper to do it this way.
