Crosley trans

Have an old 1938 Crosley. Bought it years ago as a restoration. Opened it up tonight to recap it. It had been done already and not working. Broke out the TV7 and all the tubes ck'd out fine. Reck'd all conections and found the 16mf can cap was replaced on the botton of the chasis but not taken out of the circut. Clipped and radio works fine but is it normal for the transformer to get "Very hot"
Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Bryan

A power transformer will be hot but shouldn't burn your hand. Remove the rectifier tube and operate the radio. With the rectifier tube removed other tubes will light but the transformer shouldn't get hot. It will be slightly warm after 1/2 hour. If very hot a winding is shorted.

Leaky caps will cause a transformer to be too hot. Replace electrolytic filter caps.

Your audio output tube may be causing excessive current to be drawn. Be sure the coupling cap to grid #1 is replaced. If this cap has any leakage the tube will draw too much current.

Many thanks Norm. I kind of knew it was the trans and your test confirmed it. Tranny got hot still. I let it run about 10 minutes and it was too hot to touch.
Now to find an old tranny:) Coupling caps were ok.
Thanks again
Bryan
