Tone Shaping (More Hi end Definition)
1/23/2003 12:17:56 PMBHedberg
I just replaced all of the paper caps with ETR DME caps in my RCA 10K and It sounds good but It seems that now there isn't enough Treble or Hi end coming through and the sound lacks definition. With the tone control all the way to the Treble side I find that there isn't enough Hi end or clarity. The tone control is a 10K pot in series with a .05 Cap. also in the single ended 6L6 output is a .007 to ground. I used all the same values for the replacement. I just don't want to have to crank the treble all the way up. I want to have the control give me above and below my preference for bass and treble that I find acceptable. Which caps should I focus on changing?

No definitive answer on the variance from norm if all the caps shunting to ground were the same value, one thing you might experiment with is to take loose the .05 and tack in a .01 in its place and sub in a .001 for the .007 then evaluate the systems treble level to see if it is then more satisfying to you. Seems like theres a small value of capacitance across the 6V6's plate circuitry also.
Overall then, a further optimizing of the two values might acquire the most pleasing bass/treble range. Basically in the grid or plate circuitry , higher values of caps bypass the high AF frequencies to ground, it then makes the bass frequencies appear more dominant. The designed bass response was influenced by larger coupling capacitance values......within the parameters of its initial circuit design.

Hi,

You may want to double check the resistor values in the audio stages for sure, but also in the IF stages too to make sure none have gone out of range. Once in a while a set may lose some response as a result of a lack of current, or grid voltage being off of desired design value.

This assumes that the tubes check out reasonable. A weak tube will also cut into response. Old caps may have been inherently noisy and the resulting noise floor hiss may have hidden some sound quality losses that a weak tube can have. Does not happen too often, but it happens often enough to be a consideration.

Thanx Ed, I did just that and sounds great. I don't know why I had to adjust these cap values after the recap but, sounds better than before cap job now..
