Radiola 60 Escutheons

Hello, I am restoring a Radiola 60. One of the escutheons has a wore finish (the black is worn and some sort of gold/brass is coming through. The other two are fine (all black). Does anyone out there know what finishing process was used on these originally? I am thinking black oxide, but the metal is not magnetic so it is probably not oxide. Perhaps anodizing? If I scratch the back of the plate I see a silver color metal perhaps aluminum? I would like to get these looking good w/o painting.

Thanks,
Al

The escutcheons were made of brass-plated pot metal. They look black because all the brass is gone. Painting is the only reasonable solution.
