silvertone 6424 (3424) tuning eye

i recently purchased a silvertone 6424, the radio works only on a/m no foreign stations are received i had to rework the speaker because they installed a permanent magnet instead of the original dynamic speaker. the radio has been recapped my question is, how come the tuning eye does not close all the way and it why is it that it wont receive any foreign stations thank you very much for any info

Hi Manuel

A tuning eye will only close when receiving very strong stations. Alignment and a long antenna will help. If your radio uses a 6U5/6G5 eye tube changing it to 6E5 will make it close easier.

Short wave and broadcast use the same circuitry. The difference will be coil connections and a band switch. First clean the band switch contacts. It's also possible that the oscillator isn't operating on short wave. When a tube gets weak it stops oscillating on high frequencies first. Replace the oscillator tube and see if that makes your radio operate.
