tuning eye and low volume

hello everyone,
I have tested all the tubes on my delco 1127 and they test good except the 6k6gt. Tests at 40% or in the "bad" area of the tester. The volume is low on this radio. If you turn it up, the volume does get louder, but is distorted. The tuning eye will only close between 1/4 and 1/2. Are these things related? How strong does a station need to be to close the eye? Also can a 6e5 replace a 6u5. Also, why does a 5y3 tube make a buzzing noise? Its almost like when you tap a tube, only constantly makes the noise with a little bit of a buzz in the noise, with the radio on.

Hi Sean

Tuning eye closing depends on AVC voltage being negative. It takes -22 volts for a 6U5 and - 8 for 6E5. A 6E5 will close with less signal strength. Antenna and alignment effect eye closing.

Distortion may be caused by your 6K6 circuit? Pin #5 on this tube should be 15-20 volts negative in relation to pin #8. If not you will have distortion. Try a 6V6 if you don't have another 6K6.

Don't know why a 5Y3 would buzz unless elements were rattling? With a 5Y3 is in the socket load is increased on your power transformer. This could cause laminations of the power transformer to vibrate?

:Hello, I have tested the voltage between pins 5 and 8 on the 6k6 and it is 2.9 volts. I would imagine pin 8 is chassis ground so I thought I'd check pin 5 to chassis ground and it is about the same...not sur why it so far away from neg. 15 to 20 volts yet.

Hi Sean

You will find a cap connected to pin #5 of your 6K6. From there is will go to plate of the first audio amplifier. This plate has a positive voltage. Replace this cap as a little leakage will cause pin #5 to go positive.
