Eye closure on Zenith 8s463

I have recapped and partially re-tubed a Zenith 8S463. After aligning, I get great reception, but can't get the eye to close completely. In fact, I can only get it to close half-way tops. The eye tube tests and closes completely on the tester. Any ideas on why it isn't closing when in the radio?

Hi Jon

The eye tube closes by using AVC voltage. A 6U5/6G5 needs around negative 22 volts to close. A 6E5 about -8 volts. An eye tube will not close completely if your AVC line doesn't go to these voltages.

Alignment, antenna and signal strength control the AVC voltage. Try peaking alignnent while watching the eye. Connecting an antenna to your radio will help.
