Radiola model 80 restoration notes & question
11/19/2002 10:33:59 PMSteve
I am restoring a Radiola Model 80.

Here is a link to see how I have done so far.

My question is not what it is worth today, but how
much did this unit cost in 1931?

This unit was rescued from a N. Georgia chicken coop
last Thursday November 14 for $20

I'll be finishing the cabinet next week and will begin
the chassis restoration then.

Thanks in advance

Steve,
If the cosmetics are good and all parts are there, some guides show $170 to $190. It doesn't necessarily have to be operational at that price. Sometimes re-finishing can actually reduce the value, depending upon the workmanship and authenticity of materials and finish.
Please note that I haven't looked at you site yet.
I will aslo add that sometimes radios sell for above the "typical" price on e-bay.
FYI: Reproduction cloth covered wire is available at Antique Electronic Supply and Play Things of the Past.
Hope that helps..

Thanks for the response.

I was wondering how much the radio cost when it was introduced by RCA Victor in 1931.

Todays value is irrelevant, it is just a nice fancy old radio.
All my most favorite radios are consoles from the 30's, and a few Zeniths from the 40's.
The Radiola 80 has by far the most fancy and ornate cabinet of the others I have.

Any ideas out there?

A Radiola 82 less tubes sold for $179.50. It has almost identical chassis and perhaps a slightly more elaborate cabinet. Remote control for the 82 was at "nominal extra cost". Perhaps someone out there has a sales brochure for the 80?
