OUTput transformer problems

I have a rogers majestic type 6m551 that has a 33 as an audio tube. The tube manual says a 7k load. I have a p 291 output transformer from aes...will this work?

The radio plays, but with slightly less than normal listening volume level. If you turn up the volume any more the radio distorts. The radios B+ is 90 volts, so I dont know if that has anythng to do with it. Does that voltage difference from the tube manual make a difference in output transformer primary impedence? The p-t291 works, but I think it is hooked up backwards in order for it to work. The primary side which should have 4 to 10k ohms has 4 taps. The other side has a blue wire, a brown wire, and a larger red center tapped wire. I would think hooking up the 4 tapped side should go to the radio and the other side, which has the 2 small wires and the red center tap should go to the speaker....I am using a radio shack 8 inch 8 ohm speaker. didnt have original speaker when I bought it. The radio doesnt work when I try to hook it up to the 4 to 10k ohm side.

Hi Sean, I've checked AES online catalog and I think that PT-291 should work well assuming it has an 8 ohms secondary to match the speaker.
It lists the primary impedance as 4000 to 10000 so I assume it's a universal transformer. You should be able to get close to the 7000 ohms, perhaps 8000 which will be fine. The only thing is its power rating; 8 watts. That will be OK if it fits, it will just be physically bigger than the oiginal.
There was probably a sheet with the connections for different impedances and specifications. If you don't have this (and it's not clearly marked on the transformer?) try emailing AES and ask them for the connections. The high impedance (7000) primary with the 4 wires will go to the 33 tube and the 8 ohm secondary to the speaker.
Don't expect a lot of noise from a 33 battery tube, it will only be about 1/3 watt with 90 volts B+. That's enough to hear OK but a lot less than an AC radio. The new speaker might be less sensitive than original and perhaps a smoother frequency response that won't sound as loud as as a "peaky" speaker. If it has a higher power rating, they often trade off reduced sensitivity (audio level for a given signal) for higher power rating. You might be expecting more volume than it can give.

A suggestion on interstage and output transformers.Hammond still makes some and have a reprint of their old catalogue online that can be downloaded. This will give a fair amount of information. Also on their website, in the electrical components section they have a "Classic" transformers section that lists the ones they still make along with data and links to the suppliers that carry them. I use one Canadian supplier and find them to be cheaper than AES for orders to Canada of Hammond products. The "Classic" line may not be in stock but their order desk will price and estimate shipping time. Service has been good. They alos make a special coil for Radiola III/IIIA's.
