Silvertone 6435 restoration
11/10/2002 8:52:32 PMPete Schreiner
A friend would like to restore the Silvertone 6435
multiband radio of his childhood. The radio has been
covered in the family home attice for the last 30
years. Where can we obtain a schematic and advice on
the sequence of tasks needed to restore the unit to
working condition? Sources for replacement capacitors
and tubes are also needed.

We have access to any necessary test equipment for the
electronics, but lack any schematic or alignment
information for the receiver.

Advice on what to replace outright and a sequence of
steps to follow on initial power application would
be most appreciated.

TIA,

Pete

Hi Pete

A schematic can be found here on nostalgiaair:

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Riders/SRC.htm

Click on the body of a schematic to make it larger.

Parts are available from AES, tubesandmore.com . Also try Play Things Of Past, oldradioparts.com . Their prices are lower but you need to look through a list.

Electrolytic filter capacitors should be replaced before powering up the radio. They dry out over time and can short causing other damage. When you bring the radio up having a 60 watt light bulb in series would be a good idea. If it is shorted the light will be bright, otherwise dim.

Hi Pete,
Norm's advice is excellent, as always. For some good additional information, you might want to read the webpage "Applying Power for the First Time" at:
http://www.vintage-radio.com/restore/initial-power.shtml
This webpage also gives more detailed instructions for constructing a series light-bulb tester, as mentioned by Norm.

Norm and Poston:

Thanks for the great links. All that I lack now is some alignment instructions.
We'll replace all of the electrolytic, paper, and line to ground caps before
power up with a variac and series load.

The console case will be hand rubbed to restore finish and great care will be
exercised in cleaning the dila plate.

BR,

Pete

Hi Pete, I like Norm's suggestion on the light bulb indicator...perhaps a inexpensive alternative to a VARIAC. At any rate you may want to contact A.G TANNENBAUM in Horsham, PA. I am told they have about 200 (5) drawer filing cabinets with service manuals for many vintage radios. I recently purchased a service manual copy for a RCA model 82 console I repaired and aligned. Their print quality is excellent! website:agtannenbaum.com
Phone 215-540-8055 ask for Jim (owner). He'll go over and look for you while you are on the phone and tell you if he has it and what it contains.

Regards,
Al
