philco 80 just quit working
11/7/2002 5:44:37 PMsean nelson
I went to sleep and forgot to turn off the radio. Now it just has the usuall quiet hum(probably normal) Doesnt get any stations. when I touch the 36 tubes grid cap, you get the loud ac hum, well I think thats good. When you touch the other 36 tubes grid, usually the volume would get louder(I being the antenna, I think)now touching that grid cap does nothing

Hi Sean

The Det. Oscillator, 1st #36, must have quit. Other stages are ok. Check voltages on this tube. Pin #2 & #3 must be positive. Pin #4 should have a couple volts. If you don't find a voltage problem check coil continuity.

:pin 2 is 225 volts...must be plate voltage, pin 3 has 14 milivolts, pin 4 has 41 milivolts..I would assume chassis is ground for all of these

:I noticed that the bakelite cap had a little bit of what looks like tar coming out of it, could this be the problem? If you refer to the schematic, it is the top most pin, bakelite cap #10. Took a ohm measurement, and from pin 3 to ground is 2.7 ohms,..dont think thats right. Can these bakelight caps short to ground and start oozing tar

Hi Sean

You found the problem. Cap #10 has shorted and removed your screen voltage from the oscillator. These Philco block caps become leaky and short. You can remove the old cap from inside the block and replace or just cut it add a new one.

Information about these caps can be found at Chuck's site.

Hi Something to add.. Be sure to cut your old cap out of the circuit when adding a replacement. You might want to replace the other block caps in your radio?

Hi Sean

Use .1mf for .09, .0047mf for .006, .022mf for .015. These are standard values used today. I would have suggested .01mf for .006 but after looking at the schematic decided .0047 would be better. Increasing value of this cap reduces high frequency response of a radio. Try different values. See which sound you like best?
